1. What should I look for when buying a mattress?
There are a number of things you want to consider before buying a mattress:
- Comfort. You should feel cozy and secure when you lie down.
- Support. A good mattress and foundation will support your body at all points.
- Durability. Find out what the mattress is made of; the quality of materials and how they are put together can determine how long a mattress and its foundation will last.
- Warranty. Your mattress warranty should protect you from more than just manufacturer defects; it should guarantee you a good's night sleep.
- Space. If you sleep with a partner, your mattress should be at least 60" wide.
- Value. Buy the best mattress you can afford. When you sacrifice quality, you sacrifice sleep.
2. When should I replace my mattress?
Premium or high quality mattresses typically have a lifespan of eight to ten years. However, the following physical signs may also indicate that it's time to replace your sleep set:
- You wake up tired and/or sore
- You toss or turn frequently (or you feel your partner toss and turn frequently)
- Your mattress sags
- You can feel the springs through the mattress
- Your mattress cover is soiled and/or torn
3. Why should I buy a box spring if I only need a mattress?
The box spring is your mattress' support system. And, just like your mattress, a box spring weakens over time. As it weakens, it decreases its ability to distribute weight evenly and work with your mattress to provide optimal spinal alignment and support. A sagging mattress is often an indicator that your box spring needs to be replaced.
4. Does my sleeping position affect the kind of mattress I should buy?
Yes. We can learn a lot from the way you sleep. Your sleeping position dictates which part of your body interfaces with the sleeping surface most and how much stress you your body endures during sleep. The three most common sleeping positions are back, stomach, and side.
Back sleepers require a supportive mattress that can appropriately fill the gaps in the contour of the back.
Stomach sleepers usually require the firmest support in order to prevent spinal contortion and back pain.
Side sleepers typically require a plush mattress to minimize pressure points caused by putting significant stress on the smallest areas of the body.
5. How do I know which mattress is right for my back?
All of our sleep experts are qualified to identify which mattress is likely to give you the most comfortable night's sleep. Visit us in-store and feel free to share your questions and concerns about your back. The more we know about your specific situation, the better prepared we will be to effectively determine the right mattress for you.
6. What is the benefit of a pocket coil mattress?
Pocket coil mattresses are contouring mattresses that you sleep "in" rather than "on". They conform to your exact sleeping position to maximize comfort and stability while you sleep. Like any other mattress, pocket coils aren't right for every one. Many heavier set people, for instance, may not necessarily get their best sleep on a pocket coil mattress.
7. Which type of mattress is the best mattress?
There is no "best" mattress. Everyone has unique sleeping styles and preferences; what is best for you may not be ideal for someone else. Visit a Royal Mattress showroom and ask one of our sleep experts to help identify your sleeping patterns. We can help you find the best mattress for your individual needs.
